CAT ManualThis is a featured page

The Community Assessment Tool (CAT) Manual is a selection of surveys and information gathering tools that was given to CBOD Group 121 at PST, as well as best practices and strategies for carrying those tools out at site.

From the introduction:

The Community Assessment Tool (CAT) is designed to assist volunteers in becoming familiar with the issues and needs of the communities they work in;, to understand the context of a community in an intentional structured way. The tool serves to justify and validate the work you do as a Volunteer by giving you and the community the ability to discover the community and the reasons for its successes which can be used multiply its strengths and empower the community. The tool will also help you to meet potential project collaborators, introduce yourself and to offer your services. The information will form the foundation to plan your work and possible projects for your next 2 years. Though it is a lot of work, done thoroughly the results will pay off!!While this may be the first CAT for Peace Corps Thailand, the concept of the CAT is not new to Peace Corps. It is now used in 11 other Peace Corps countries as an integral part of many PCVs service. This CAT was originally adapted from The Save Children Alliance by Peace Corps Costa Rica.

All English-language links are to the PC Thailand Sharepoint site, so have your password handy.
For the time being, Thai translations are directly uploaded to Wetpaint, so you can put that password down, now, Sonny.

CharChar! How can we make the CAT better? 1 Sep 9 2009, 8:15 AM EDT by peteo

Below are some guiding questions that may help you think about possible feedback.

Was the PDM training useful? Why or why not?

What suggestions do you have to improve the PDM training?

For TCCO'ers, how might the CAT and the PDM be more useful to your program?

What was the most effective part of the CAT for you? Least effective?

What suggestions might you have to modify/ improve the CAT?

Did the PDM training initiate actual project design and implementation at your site?

Should PST I include more PDM training since the CAT is inevitiably part of the PDM?

How might the CAT and PDM trainings be more integrated?

How can we make the CAT and PDM more understandable to our Thai counterparts?

Thanks for your time everyone, keep up the good work!

From my point of view, I feel that the one concept that we really did not communicate very well or inculcate in the trainees was the fact that the Community Assessment is a participatory planning tool - meaning that it was to be done together with the community. This was a process that the community went through with the PCV facilitating the process. It should be a part of community planning process and the Tambon planning process.

So, I would add the following questions to your survey:

1. To what extent was the Community Assessment a participatory process with the host community?

2. What could have made it a more participatory process?

3. What could have been done during training to prepare you for the participatory nature of the community assessment?

Now I think I now what you're talking about. It's a problem accessing files stored on SharePoint (the site starting with 'th.peacecorps.gov') rather than on the wiki (pcthailand.wetpaint.com). Is that correct? Can you access the pages and files you created or attached directly on the PCThailand.Wetpaint.com site?

I noticed that you linked to files on SharePoint (i.e., ISA, or 'th.peacecorps.gov'). This site will have a different user name and password. Usually the user name is

pcvth-[first initial + last name]

where the [first initial + last name] is replaced with your actual name. For example, for John Doe, his user name would be: pcvth-jdoe

Check with Khun Teerapoj to see what your password is (and double check the username). This should all be the same as what you use to log into the computers in the volunteer lounge. Teerapoj's email address is: THankulwatana@th.peacecorps.gov

How do you view the forms and surveys? The page after clicking on them requests a password and name, but offers no way to register in the first place.
