A PRIMER ON HOW TO BECOME CERTIFIED TO TEACH ENGLISH IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY

As a follow on to VAC’s question regarding Peace Corps’ ability to offer TEFL certification to TCCO volunteers, PC staff researched how persons become certified to teach English.

First of all, it is important to research the requirements of the country in which you wish to teach. That is because some countries will accept only certifications from certain certifying organizations. It is also important to decide whether you wish to teach adults or children. One certification for teaching adults is known as CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). And, finally consider if you will be doing TEFL or TESL. TEFL is a term used to describe the teaching of English in countries where access to English is very limited and English is considered a foreign language (such as Thailand or China). TESL, on the other hand is used in countries where English is a second language and students need the language in order to prepare for examinations or to use at work. India, Singapore and Malaysia are good examples. TESL is also commonly used in English-speaking western countries with foreign immigrants. Some dual (TEFL/TESL) certificates are available.

You do not need to be previously qualified as a teacher in order to obtain certification. There are also some differences in whether you become certified by a British or an American entity so always check the requirements of your prospective employers as well as the accreditations of the organization by which you choose to become certified. Course fees vary from as low as $60 for an on-line course to supplement a qualified teacher’s credentials to $1600 for a full time one month certification course in Thailand for a native English speaker with no prior teaching experience.

Khun Nipawan has included some links below (a small sample but ones that are known to be reputable) to some of the possible certifying organizations that can be accessed here in Thailand. Some of these are internet based courses and others are classroom based.
