If high-speed internet is something that appeals to you, there are currently two ways in which volunteers can connect, through a phone line, a.k.a. land line, or satellite.
Phone Line (a.k.a. Land Line)If you have a phone line connected in your house then you might want to look into having high-speed internet come through the line. There are two big phone companies in Thailand, TOT and TT&T and both offer high-speed ADSL internet services. If the house does have a phone line, more than likely it will be owned by one of these two companies and you will then have the option of having high-speed internet in your house. If the house doesn’t have a phone line, one can be installed for about 1000 baht, however it’s not always possible to get one installed. Additionally, the presence of a phone line doesn’t always guarantee the opportunity of having high-speed internet. The more rural you are and the farther away you are from a city lessens the chance that your house will be in reach of the phone companies more premium services. Below are the monthly fees for ADSL internet service from the TOT company. Furthermore, there is a monthly fee of about 100 baht for the use of the phone line. In addition to these fees, there might also be an initial installation fee as well as a modem fee.
| Plan | Download/Upload Speed* | Monthly fee (baht) |
| Super | 256/128 Kbs | 500 |
| Silver | 512/256 Kbs | 700 |
| Gold | 1024/256 Kbs | 1000 |
*As with the AIS network, although TOT’s service is capable of reaching these speeds, it doesn’t often do so due to user overload.
Satellite
Unless you win the Thai lottery, this won’t be a viable option for most volunteers. Still, if you are able to save up enough and connecting through a phone line isn’t possible, satellite is the next best alternative to having personal high-speed internet. The biggest advantage to satellite is no matter how rural you are, you will still be able to connect to the internet at fairly decent speeds. The biggest negative, as previously mentioned, is the high price. Weather also plays a factor in determining connectivity. The largest company offering internet satellite service is IPStar. Installation fees are 15,000 baht with monthly fees beginning at 2,500 baht.
