Updates: Hello PCVs!!
I speak for the entire group 120 GAD committee when I say we are excited to announce our upcoming GAD conference to be held at the Don Bosco Center in Hua Hin on October 18, 19, and 20. The format of the conference will be a life skills camp in which each volunteer will be asked to invite one co-worker and two students from his or her community. As the theme of our camp will be "Gender in Thailand: Past, Present and Future," we ask that you invite enthusiastic students and teachers while being mindful of gender identity. (Which means please strongly consider kathooeys while selecting students.)
Our camp will be a series of carefully planned activities that ask students, teachers and volunteers to consider their own internalized ideas about gender roles and what they can observe about the society they live in. We will examine the progression of ideas about gender by considering how society and individuals thought differently about gender in the past, how we think about it now and what changes we hope to see in the future. We will integrate these activities with team-building and critical thinking activities that will also encourage students to be comfortable in a range of situations and challenge them to think about problems in new ways. Sounds like heavy material, but believe me its going to be a lot of fun!
We have availability for ten volunteers, and we will be selecting participants on August 8th. Please contact any member of the GAD GIG for a copy of the application. The deadline for applications is August 1, and may be submitted to any GAD member.
The application also includes a letter asking volunteers and counterparts to find sponsorship for covering travel expenses. We will provide room and board, but we ask that anyone participating be able to cover the cost of transportation. Please consider this when completing the application and email or fax your signed letter to Khun Suwimon.
Join us for two and a half days on the beach with our Thai colleagues and students, we hope to see you there!
Always here to serve you,
The GAD gig :)
