Phonics is a teaching approach that shows students the connection between the letters on the page and sounds that you make when saying thethey words.represent. This helps students to better remember the words they already know and to better pronounce and identify new words they encounter.

  • An Introductory article on Phonics - by Scott Hajek 119 --- Read a more detailed explanation of phonics and an introduction to Scott's "phonics notebook" activity. Article is as it appeared in Speak English, spring 2008 edition.
  • U.S. National Reading Panel - Congress commissioned an independent panel of scholars to analyze the body of research to date about phonics. The panel wrote an in-depth assessment of phonics instruction in 2000. The panel answers questions like: Is explicit, phonics-based instruction more effective than non-phonics instruction? What kinds of phonics instruction are there? Which kind of phonics instruction is best? The panel produced several documents that are available for free:
