Thai Romanization ChartThis is a featured page

Thai Romanization is the transliteration (rewriting) of Thai proper names and terms using the Roman alphabet. The transliteration process is based solely on the sound of the words.
Below is a chart of equivalencies between different systems of symbols for representing the sounds in Thai. The "dictionary" column refers to the Thai-English dictionary by Benjawan Poomsan Becker, the one usually given to volunteers upon arrival to Peace Corps Thailand. The second column, IPA, refers to the International Phonetic Alphabet as established by an international organization of linguists. The third column, "Thai romanization," is the standard officially endorsed by the Royal Thai Government for the writing of Thai proper names of people and places in English. Note that the government's version is less precise with regards to a few of the sounds, but it is the only one of the three on this page that can be typed without specialized keyboards and software. The final column gives English examples of the sounds that the symbols represent, giving closest approximations of the sounds where exact Thai-English sound equivalencies don't exist.
