Below are some guiding questions that may help you think about possible feedback. Was the PDM training useful? Why or why not? What suggestions do you have to improve the PDM training? For TCCO'ers, how might the CAT and the PDM be more useful to your program? What was the most effective part of the CAT for you? Least effective? What suggestions might you have to modify/ improve the CAT? Did the PDM training initiate actual project design and implementation at your site? Should PST I include more PDM training since the CAT is inevitiably part of the PDM? How might the CAT and PDM trainings be more integrated? How can we make the CAT and PDM more understandable to our Thai counterparts? Thanks for your time everyone, keep up the good work! -PRC 121
-- Heidi Mahoney
From my point of view, I feel that the one concept that we really did not communicate very well or inculcate in the trainees was the fact that the Community Assessment is a participatory planning tool - meaning that it was to be done together with the community. This was a process that the community went through with the PCV facilitating the process. It should be a part of community planning process and the Tambon planning process.
So, I would add the following questions to your survey:
1. To what extent was the Community Assessment a participatory process with the host community?
2. What could have made it a more participatory process?
3. What could have been done during training to prepare you for the participatory nature of the community assessment?

RE: How can we make the CAT better?

This was a comment from staff that I really liked: "I wonder if some people haven't lost sight of: this, [CAT'ing], is supposed to be a fun activity" So, I would add in the Kirpatrick-y: "Did you have fun?" "What did you (PCV) enjoy about doing the CAT?" and then repeat both for the Community/"Counterpart"
100% agree with Heidi.
120's CBOD PST1 was real PD heavy. It wasn't very good at all- you do a little mini-project that has no real benefit to the community, and which was unrealistic in implementation (i.e.- you do it with your language group, so the project, the presentation, the design all occur with 3 other farang, and not with Thai community; it occurs with an LIF present, project presentation and facilitation occurs with other farang as an audience).
I think the hope, in reaction to that failure, was to get the CAT in your guys' hands, make you better surveyors, and integrate the PDM aspects in later, closer to the point when such events would happen over the course of service? Alec and Cameron would know better, though, as well as Tuffin- as he was at the fore of re-writing 121's PST...

Now I think I now what you're talking about. It's a problem accessing files stored on SharePoint (the site starting with 'th.peacecorps.gov') rather than on the wiki (pcthailand.wetpaint.com). Is that correct? Can you access the pages and files you created or attached directly on the PCThailand.Wetpaint.com site?
I noticed that you linked to files on SharePoint (i.e., ISA, or 'th.peacecorps.gov'). This site will have a different user name and password. Usually the user name is
pcvth-[first initial + last name]
where the [first initial + last name] is replaced with your actual name. For example, for John Doe, his user name would be: pcvth-jdoe
Check with Khun Teerapoj to see what your password is (and double check the username). This should all be the same as what you use to log into the computers in the volunteer lounge. Teerapoj's email address is: THankulwatana@th.peacecorps.gov

That is correct. In theory, all attachments should go to the Sharepoint (due to limits on how many documents can be on the Wiki). ICT needs to/will determine if this rule is going to be followed, but that's where I've been uploading my/ROOT's stuff.
And you are right about that being the same log-in as the Lounge. Thanks for uploading the translations, by the way. Peter

Hi! Well, i know some of the surveys from the CAT don't have phonetics (that is, you can only give the survey to the group, person but not ask the question yourself), so I've translated the surveys that don't have the questions in phonetics for y'all. This means that instead of shoving a piece of paper at someone to get information, you can ask the questions instead, and have a real conversation. Yay! The only problem is how to type it phonetically; you know! the upside down e's, backwards c's, etc. If any could tell me how to do this using the CD Bill gave us "CBOD Top Hits", I'll gladly post it for everyone. If not, then I'll just make up for the lack of backward c's using the "w" (chawp=like), ok? I need feedback! Thank you!

RE: Transliterating an entire Text File
By: ,
Sep 3 2009, 1:15 AM EDT
Try this. Open the original document you want to convert to romanized script. It's okay if you leave the English in there, too. Now save the file as a different file type. If you're using Microsoft (MS) Word XP (2003) then you should go to File > Save As. If you're using MS Word 2007, then you'll click the four-colored button in the upper-left, move the mouse over "Save As"; in the new options that come up, click on "Other Formats". In the bottom field called "Save as type:" click the drop-down box and select "Plain Text (*.txt)". Then save the file. If it warns you that you'll lose some features or if it gives you further options, just go with the default and click YES or OK. Now switch to the Thai Romanization program, click "Roman" > then "Text File", and select the text file (ending in ".txt") that you just saved.
If you're still having problems but still want to figure out how to do a whole file at once, let me know. However, if you don't feel comfortable with it, you could always paste smaller chunks of the Thai text right into the program's window and have it convert chunk by chunk.

This may have been brought up at the last VAC meeting, but here goes:
I want to form a CAT committee to make recommendations to the training staff on how to manage the CAT training for the next group.
The next group shouldn't have to go through so much frustration doing the CAT, and I think we should help. We need to talk to Jaree and Peggy, as well as Suvimon, since the TCCOers will have to do this too, to an extent. William Tuffin has already volunteered as an adviser. We may not have the budget, but since when has that ever stopped volunteers from getting together?
Please respond soon, because right now the Peace Corps staff is doing site identification for group 122!

How does it work?
I don't have a mail box and I have a gate. Will the mailman unlatch my gate, walk up my inner courtyard, knock on my door, slide letter under?
Is it better to have stuff delivered to our school/office?

I get my mail sent to my SAO, I'm CBOD, but would like it sent to my house instead for two reasons: 1. sometimes I get a care package from home that's too big to bike, like the b-day one I just got, with so I have to ask someone to go out of their way to help me, 2. my SAO is very curious about what I get, and my counterpart likes to read my mail from home, and sometimes forces me to give away items that I'd rather keep.

Is there a particular reason why a large amount of content was deleted from the Thai Language page? It was primarily information on romanizing Thai, how to set up a US computer to type Thai, and basic survival Thai phrases. If this deletion was a mistake, the deletions can be reverted. ~Scott

Proposed Agenda from Angela: 1. Spend time being excited about our donation from the AWC. Yay, Lacey! 2. Discuss and find out if and how we can accept this donation. (Khun Suwimon, can you research this for us?) 3. Discuss the original project proposal: possible dates, locations, number of PCVs, counterparts, kids etc. 4. Create a budget and discuss how would we get the rest of the necessary funding. (There is a great student camp facility in Hua Hin called the Don Bosco center, my co-teacher says it has been about 30 baht a head in the past, but will get more details before the meeting. Can anyone think of important questions I should remember to ask about this place?) 5. Other GAD issues: Next Newsletter? Wiki stuff? Any other events we should plan on for this year? Maybe thank you to Khun Rumpai and Khun Marilee for having us at PST? 6. PST 121 processing: How did it go? What would we like to say at PST 121? Should we try to get a real time slot to go with our time to present GAD to PCVs? (I am thinking a session that addresses the role that gender plays in development in Thailand. Maybe appropriate at this time as everyone will have had some work experience?)

From Lacey in response to proposed agenda: I think we should contact Jake the new AO as soon as possible. Whenever I get a go ahead from someone I will draft an email to Jake with the proposal attached. I have corresponded with him once already and he seems eager to answer questions and get workin'.

This thread is meant to discuss the positives and negatives of the Phrae Curriculum Project started by Chris Wagner 113.
My first semester I tried using the Phrae curriculum and its lesson plans. I found that they have some good activity ideas, but the grammar and vocabulary does NOT carefully build upon itself. This confused my students. Also, it's a work in progress, so a few of the lessons are a little incomplete. By my second semester, my co-teacher and I abandoned the Phrae curriculum and went back to her old textbook. Now in my third semester, we've changed to a better textbook and are using that as a backbone to our curriculum.
NOTE: Most textbooks sold in Thailand at least claim to be based on the National Curriculum, so if you find a textbook that you like, you might want to reverse-engineer your own curriculum from it instead of basing your curriculum on the Phrae curriculum.
My suggestion is to get a copy of the Phrae lesson plans so you can get ideas for units/themes and individual activities, but go shopping for a good textbook with your co-teacher to serve as a curriculum crutch. Search for 'textbooks' on wiki for suggestions.

hey, look what happens when you google yourself...chris from 113...i would say right on with the critiques, but a quick note with the vocabulary, i tried to group those thematically...and we were able to get the Thai National Curriculum (now this was 2004) and we wrote the curriculum around that...we also had the Phrae teachers and education supervisors review it to make sure, so it should be aligned-- but absolutely, a work in progress, we finished it a couple months before COS, and extended a bit to work with it with my teachers in Phrae-- cool to see it somewhere still being used!

Just to be clear, I have no idea if the recipes from the 2007 cookbook are any good or not. I'm just copying them on to the wiki pages in blind faith. Likewise, I take no responsibility for how available or scarce some of the ingredients might be; I have no idea where 117er Carolyn McGee (for instance) got her sea salt except probably in Bangkok.

Great work, John. I've skimmed through the instructions, and they look pretty accurate. They're also fairly simple. Perhaps we can tweak them so they will be comprehensible for Thais with intermediate English. Also, maybe we can structure the page so that the organization is more visually digestible.
